This report, commissioned by Marrakesh Records from media consultancy Human Capital, makes chilling reading for businesses which generate revenue by selling recorded music: ”we find that the majority would even sacrifice sex for music. And yet music is increasingly becoming a commodity for which young people do not expect to pay.”
I came across it whilst doing some work for the Strategic Advisory Board for Intellectual Property which has recently commissioned a literature review of existing research into consumer attitudes and behaviours to IP in the online environment from a team at UCL.
One of their major findings is that all the serious surveys into how people behave towards copyright material in the digital world has looked at students and teenagers. There is very little evidence about the attitudes of older demographics.
Tough call… Most shocking news is that kids are listening to music on cassette players! Cheers Frank, The complete pdf is at http://www.marrakeshrecords.com/ RIAA stats for 2007 http://www.riaa.com/keystatistics.php?content_selector=consumertrends
