Industry call to ‘disconnect file sharers’

An “industry alliance”, involving amongst others the BPI and the UK Film Council, has issued a joint statement calling on the government to force ISPs to take action against people who are illegally file-sharing.

According to a report on the BBC news site “Eight creative bodies and five trade unions have signed a joint statement asking the government to force ISPs into banning users caught sharing illegally. It marks a significant hardening of their stance on the role of ISPs, which in the past has focused on education and awareness.”

The alliance hopes that the government will include a commitment to clamping down on piracy in the final Digital Britain report.

Great! Keep ownership in the hands of the few – good to see that inequality and unwarranted privilege are high on the industry’s agenda in the digital age.

McLuhan and Adorno have already put the writing on the wall – digital culture will be decentralised and the culture industry – a last vestige of the mechanical age will fade into insignificance

An ‘industry alliance’ taking ‘action against people who are illegally file-sharing’? Where’s King Canute when you need him?
